چکیده

Partial Cover problems are optimization versions of fundamental and well studied problems like Vertex Cover and Dominating Set. Here one is interested in covering (or dominating) the maximum number of edges (or vertices) using a given number (k) of vertices, rather than covering all edges (or vertices). In general graphs, these problems are hard for parameterized complexity classes when parameterized by k. It was recently shown by Amini et. al. [FSTTCS 08 ] that Partial Vertex Cover and Partial Dominating Set are fixed parameter tractable on large classes of sparse graphs, namely H-minor free graphs, which include planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus. In particular, it was shown that on planar graphs both problems can be solved in time 2O(k)nO(1). During the last decade there has been an extensive study on parameterized subexponential algorithms. In particular, it was shown that the classical Vertex Cover and Dominating Set problems can be solved in subexponential time on H-minor free graphs. The techniques developed to obtain subexponential algorithms for classical problems do not apply to partial cover problems. It was left as an open problem by Amini et al. [FSTTCS 08 ] whether there is a subexponential algorithm for Partial Vertex Cover and Partial Dominating Set. In this paper, we answer the question affirmatively by solving both problems in time 2O( √ k)nO(1) not only on planar graphs but also on much larger classes of graphs, namely, apex-minor free graphs. Compared to previously known algorithms for these problems our algorithms are significantly faster and simpler.

Bidimensionality and geometric graphs

Bidimensionality theory was introduced by Demaine et al. [JACM 2005 ] as a framework to obtain algorithmic results for hard problems on minor closed graph classes. The theory has been sucessfully applied to yield subexponential time parameterized algorithms, EPTASs and linear kernels for many problems on families of graphs excluding a fixed graph H as a minor. In this paper we use several of th...

Subexponential Parameterized Algorithms Collapse the W - hierarchy ∗ ( Extended

It is shown that for essentially all MAX SNP-hard optimization problems finding exact solutions in subexponential time is not possible unless W [1] = FPT . In particular, we show that O(2p(n)) parameterized algorithms do not exist for Vertex Cover, Max Cut, Max c-Sat, and a number of problems on bounded degree graphs such as Dominating Set and Independent Set, unless W [1] = FPT . Our results a...

On the Complexity of Unique Games and Graph Expansion

Understanding the complexity of approximating basic optimization problems is one of the grand challenges of theoretical computer science. In recent years, a sequence of works established that Khot’s Unique Games Conjecture, if true, would settle the approximability of many of these problems, making this conjecture a central open question of the field. The results of this thesis shed new light o...

Faster Approximation Schemes and Parameterized Algorithms on H-Minor-Free and Odd-Minor-Free Graphs

We improve the running time of the general algorithmic technique known as Baker’s approach (1994) on H-minor-free graphs from O(n) to O(f(|H |)n) showing that it is fixed-parameter tractable w.r.t. the parameter |H |. The numerous applications include e.g. a 2-approximation for coloring and PTASes for various problems such as dominating set and max-cut, where we obtain similar improvements. On ...

Subexponential parameterized algorithms on graphs of bounded-genus and H-minor-free graphs

We introduce a new framework for designing fixed-parameter algorithms with subexponential running time—2 √ n. Our results apply to a broad family of graph problems, called bidimensional problems, which includes many domination and covering problems such as vertex cover, feedback vertex set, minimum maximal matching, dominating set, edge dominating set, clique-transversal set, and many others re...
